Congresswoman Kay Granger Named Recipient of 2017 Great American Patriot Award presented by Armed Forces Insurance
FORT WORTH, Texas – U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger will be awarded the 2017 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl Great American Patriot Award. Presented by Armed Forces Insurance, the Great American Patriot Award honors a candidate in recognition of their exemplary service to the United States.
“Congresswoman Kay Granger has been an extraordinary force for Fort Worth, the state of Texas and our country during her time in public office”, said Brant Ringler, executive director of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. “She is an extremely deserving recipient of the 2017 Great American Patriot Award presented by Armed Forces Insurance, and we can’t wait to celebrate her in her hometown on December 23”.
Currently, Granger serves as the Chairwoman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee where she works to ensure that continued support is readily available for our nation’s service members and their families.
Throughout her time in public service supporting the armed forces, Granger has received numerous awards and recognitions including being presented with the highest form of recognition from the secretary of the Navy with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award. She was also presented with the Department of the Army’s Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service by the secretary of the Army.

Born in Greenville, Texas and raised in Fort Worth, Kay Granger graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a major in education. After working as a high school journalism and English teacher, she opened and operated her own insurance agency before becoming involved in politics. In 1991, Granger was elected as the first female Mayor of Fort Worth.
A longtime champion of the USS Fort Worth Support Committee, Granger is the ship sponsor and was a key influencer in having the ship named for the city.
Throughout her time in public service, Kay Granger has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being named to the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame and the Fort Worth Business Hall of Fame.
Congresswoman Granger will join a selective group of previous Great American Patriot Award recipients, including Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, General Mark Welsh, General Peter Pace, Medal of Honor Recipient Salvatore Giunta, Admiral William McRaven and General Norton A. Schwartz, among others.
Candidates for the award must be of high moral fiber and good character, having spent their lives and/or careers serving the common good of the United States. They should have gone beyond the call of duty to serve and protect this country, with proven dedication and loyalty in upholding the Constitution and the laws of the nation. Finally, the Great American Patriot Award winner should have worked tirelessly to make the U.S. a better and safer place for all its citizens.
The annual game, played in honor of the Armed Forces of the United States, is the nly collegiate football bowl game that has hosted all three U.S. Military Academy football teams. The U.S. Military Academy (2010), the U.S. Air Force Academy (2007-2009, 2012, 2015) and the U.S. Naval Academy (2013, 2016) have all previously participated in the bowl.
Last year’s game saw the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs defeat the Navy Midshipmen 48-45, on a field goal as time expired in front of a crowd of 40,542.
The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl has featured the “armed forces” theme since 2006. Patriotic overtones recognizing all five branches of the service are prevalent throughout the game. Past Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowls have included fan-fest adventure areas showcasing armed forces hardware; flyovers; demonstrations by several of the military's top skydiving teams; custom homes awarded to wounded warriors; on-field induction ceremonies; armed forces bands and honor guards; and the annual Great American Patriot Award presented by Armed Forces Insurance.
